A diagnostic code identifies the system that noticed a problem. It does not automatically identify the part that should be replaced.
Steady versus flashing
A steady light usually means the computer stored a fault that needs diagnosis. A flashing light can indicate an active misfire capable of damaging the catalytic converter, so reduce load and stop driving if the engine is running badly.
- Note when the light appeared
- Watch for rough running, power loss or unusual smells
- Do not clear codes before the technician can record them
Why codes are not parts lists
A lean code can come from unmetered air, fuel delivery, an exhaust leak or a sensor problem. An oxygen-sensor code may describe a circuit issue rather than a failed sensor.
